about

Conceived in 2005, Somewhere Not Here was an instrumental work in progress from Rik Clay (guitarist of FULC) who strays from his usual choice of instrument, the guitar, into new territory, making full use of a computer as an instrument in its own right.

There were plans for more collaborations with other musicians and a full audio visual live show, however Rik sadly died shortly after his 26th birthday in August 2008 and as a consequence he left behind a body of work, mostly created in 2006, that is only now being evaluated for release in 2010.

“a work in progress”………

This was how Rik described his solo project SomewhereNotHere following the demise of FULC in mid 2005. To fill the void he started work on the music compiled in this album and downed tools equally abruptly nine months later in 2006, leaving behind what we have today. Following a brief but productive stint with Ten Seconds of Chaos, Rik moved on from his music leaving behind a fascinating glimpse into his world, from both a musical perspective and ( in hindsight ) personally, as evidenced by his choice of song titles, which probably give some uncanny clues as to his state of mind.

Whilst exploring Riks hard drive to pull the music together it was clearly chock full of little ideas which he never got round to developing. The tracks featured here are the most complete of the set and are presented exactly as he left them.

When Rik died his ashes were scattered on Ilkley Moor, a place he loved to wander. There is no memorial or headstone, but as this project developed it struck me that this would be Riks memorial, some part of him that would remain forever with everyone who owns it. Something that can be picked up, listened to, perused and mused over whenever the fancy takes you….a residual connection however slight that might be.

The unexpected side to this project was the input I started getting from others who wanted to offer their own contribution, as a result it became both memorial and tribute to Rik, something that made me prouder than ever to have the privilege of being his father.

The album title “residual hum from a parallel universe” was my idea, it seemed appropriate in many ways, the residual hum being both the music Rik left behind and the echoes of his life, all bouncing back at us from wherever he resides now. It is also a reflection of sorts of some of Riks inner beliefs.

It’s been a very long and difficult journey to get here but I’m certain of all things that Rik would have been proud of this.
